Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been awarded the £15 million contract for the transformation of Old Street Roundabout under Transport for London’s (TfL) Civils Projects Framework, to which we were appointed in January 2017.

The two stage design and build contract is the first scheme to be commissioned under the Framework, which supports TfL’s £4 billion Roads Modernisation Programme, delivering the enhancement and refurbishment of tunnels, bridges and other structures across Greater London’s road network.

The Old Street Roundabout project aims to significantly upgrade facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport by providing segregated cycle lanes, more bus lanes and more pedestrian space. The roundabout island will be removed to form a new peninsula-style junction, reintroducing two-way traffic movements and converting the existing roundabout into an open and accessible public space.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, supported by design partners WSP, commenced the design phase in late November 2017, with works planned to start on site from Autumn 2018.

Paul Gott, managing director of Highways at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, said: “We are delighted to be awarded the first project under TfL’s Civils Projects Framework. This scheme calls upon a wide variety of expertise, interfacing with the TfL strategic road network and London Underground’s Old St Station entrance.

“We are looking forward to starting work on this transformational scheme, and our strong track record of similar projects means we are well placed to deliver it.”

Leon Daniels, managing director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: “The radical redesign of Old Street roundabout will help achieve our shared objectives of improved air quality, reduced car dependency and more active travel. This project will ensure the people who work in or visit the area benefit from a truly inspiring new public space.”
