Head of Project Controls

Location: Rugby / Hybrid

We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Project Controls to drive planning leadership, resource management, and project control excellence across our Energy business unit. This is a senior leadership role, reporting to the Director of Engineering and Technical Services, responsible for ensuring best-in-class planning, risk management, cost control, and performance reporting.

 

The Role:

As Head of Project Controls, you will:

Planning Leadership & Competence

  • Lead planning strategies across pre-contract and project delivery phases.
  • Ensure the appointment of competent and experienced planners for projects.
  • Oversee programme development and monitoring, ensuring compliance with ITT, design, and commercial requirements.
  • Provide critical path analysis and logic testing to enhance project delivery.
  • Deliver tender programme presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain expertise in planning software (e.g., Primavera P6) and ensure its effective use.

Project Controls

  • Define and develop for Energy a fit for purpose project controls model (people/ process/ system) for managing our 4 pillars: planning, risk, cost, and performance reporting. 
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive project controls model covering planning, risk, cost, and performance reporting.
  • Anticipate risks and opportunities, advising on mitigation strategies.
  • Anticipate opportunities for risks in advance and advise on options to resolve. 
  • Conduct independent project progress assessments to ensure objective reporting.
  • Collaborate with the commercial team to produce earned value analysis

 

Planning Job Family & Career Pathways

  • Establish a clear career pathway for planning professionals within the business.
  • Provide training and development to enhance planning competency.

Resource Planning

  • Implement a robust resource management tool to provide accurate demand vs. supply insights.
  • Develop and maintain an effective resourcing strategy to meet future project demands.

Resource Planning: 

  • Mobilise and maintain for Energy a fit for purpose resource tool (one version of the truth) generating robust MI (demand vs. supply) to enable SLT informed decisions.
  • Ensure that we have an effective resourcing strategy in place to enable the appointment of competent planners to future projects.

Project Controls: 

  • Objectively assess progress of project independently of project team.

 

The Candidate

Qualifications & Technical Knowledge

  • Degree-qualified or equivalent experience in engineering, construction, or project management.
  • Expert in project planning software, preferably Primavera P6.
  • Extensive experience in programme and project management, risk analysis, and cost control.
  • Strong understanding of commercial impacts on project baselines.

About our Energy business

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair and refurbishment services.
